Waycross, Georgia, in the Jacksonville Florida Mission
![]() |
Facts about Waycross
*The area now known as Waycross was first settled around 1820, locally known as "Old Nine" or "Number Nine" and then Pendleton, Tebeauville. Then Waycross in March, 1935.*During the 1950s the city had a tourist gimmick. The local police would stop motorists with out-of-state license plates and escort them to downtown Waycross. There they would be met by the Welcome World Committee and given overnight lodging, dinner and a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp. The tradition faded away after the interstates opened through Georgia.
*During the mid 1990s, Waycross became the birthplace and testing ground of a frozen hamburger you can start cooking without defrosting called Bubba Burgers. Bubba Burgers are now sold nation-wide as well as world-wide through the United States Military Commissary system.
*Waycross, Georgia, in Ware county, is 73 miles NW of Jacksonville, Florida.
* It is the closest city to the Okefenokee Swamp.
*Train Watching: Waycross was the hub for stagecoach traffic, which led to the home of Plant System Railroad. Streets were laid in the pattern of the Maltese Cross, which was part of the Plant Sys. RR logo, a new city was born. The railroad plays an important role in its economy. Home of the largest CSX computerized rail yard on the East Coast.
*Some say Waycross got its name, because this was "where the ways crossed". Others will claim that Waycross was so named because it was "the way of the cross" due to numerous churches that were built there in those days.
Jun 30, 2014 - Building Good Relationships.
This week has been has been amazing one, so much has happened and we
have been blessed with so many miracles coming our way. One big one
was Reakwon, he is a 17 year old black kid that we came across as we
were going to see potential, I might have talked about him last week
but he came to play ball with us last pday and is coming again today.
We had the opportunity to have three lessons with him this week and
the first time we meet with him he had asked if we do baptisms and he
has an super strong desire to be baptized by any means possible, ya
WOW he is so ready he believes everything we tell him and has been
reading from the Book of Mormon, he didn't come o church this last
Sunday cause he told his sister that he was going to go with her to
church, he has a date on for the 26 of July and he is so ready. Then
we also went to a pool party this week for a kid turning 5, it was
hard being next to a pool and not swimming but I made it through
without jumping in, ended playing some basketball there with some
older kids, the hoop was a little lower so we did a dunk contest.
Now Sundays was crazy, started off with finding out that elder redd
has been using my toothbrush all week, ya what the heck is up with
that, he got a new toothbrush last pday but thought mine was his which
made no since at all, so I made him get me a new brush. Then at church
sadly we had no investigators show up, but we still had a good
meeting. I am starting to build some good relationships with members
out here. There are some pretty cool families. Then after church we
got back out and tried seeing some people, went to go see one
potential but she isn't interested but her niece was willing to listen
and we had a powerful restoration lesson with her, her name is Miranda
and we were able to set a baptism date with her for the 26th of July,
things are just happening left and right. The. That night we went
tracting for an hour and found some really good potentials that we
will be seeng tomorrow, one lady we came across actually has a brother
who is a member but didn't know anything so we shared a short message
with her and invited her to come to church. She said that she would if
we visited hers, so this upcoming Sunday we are going to her church at
7 which is a holiness church, which is a holy roller church, you know
those ones that when they feel the Holy Ghost they go crazy. So ya
this will be interest. Also the weather is getting hot out here, we
will be on bikes this week and it will probably be in the 100s, ouch,
well just got to make the best of it.

Jun 24, 2014 - "How Georgia is Different from Florida"
Mommy, I love you. Can't believe you didn't run the dirty dash,
thought you said you would run it the next time we did it, guess you
will just have to wait until I get home to run it with me!!! And wow I
can't believe Laura ran into your car. She's good at that isn't
she.... Now as for your questions, Georgia is different from Florida
mainly cause there are a lot more red necks up here, but also there is
a whole lot more bugs, the nats are driving me crazy, they seem to
love my ears for so e reason, also it is a lot more hot out here and
the humidity is worse, especially when it rans, but I still love
waycross cause I just like being out in the country. P-days out here
are a little different though. Mostly we play ball with the other set
of elders here. When I first came out here I was asking people what is
there fun to do out here and I would next two answers, some said get
in trucks and go mudding but most said go to walmart, now that is
pretty said, but I Guess you got to do what you got to do. I love you
mommy, more that's all the bounces of a basketball that there has ever
been, ya just try and count those.

Jun 24, 2014 - The Work Goes On
Time just keeps flying by so fast. This past weeks we have been really
busy yet we weren't able to teach very many lessons. We were on bikes
all week and also did a lot of service. We helped his former
investigator clean out this shed or old run down apartment behind her
house, wasn't to bad, full of spiders and mice, even a couple dead
rats, but we got it all cleaned up. Then we did some other service for
this member who is from Atlanta but is down here helping fix up a
house for her sister to sell, and is having a lot of problems in doing
so, so we helped out for a little bit, she gave us some food to eat
which was mcdonalds. Back home we had mcdonalds,
like once a year if that, but on a mission we have it
like all the time cause it's so cheap. Oh don't let me forget I also got to go to the temple back on
Thursday, so Wednesday night we went to the zone leaders apartment and
spent the night with then, then elder Jensen and I headed down to the
mission office in the morning to meet up to head down to Orlando. It
was way cool, there was 48 missionaries there. And I really enjoyed
going to the temple again. Oh then there was the transfer call
yesterday and elder redd and I are staying together here in waycross,
oh boy.... Na it will be good. Well I do have to say I wish I was
there for the dirty dash but it looks like you all had a lot of fun
with out me, but that's okay, I'll be there next year for it.

Jun 16, 2014 - Crazy Storm & Investigators Galore
Alright so let's see, so much has happened this week but where to
begin. Last week we got a call from this lady to go do some service
for her son. So on Tuesday we went over to his house and helped him
out, it ended up being more that we thought. We were there for 5 hours
and didn't even finish. We were shoveling dirt under his trailer house
cause water was pilling up under there when it would rain, and that
day was so hot, I was sweating like crazy and my arms were so tired at
the end, but hey we did get a free meal out of it. Then on Thursday we
went back to finish the job, turned out to be another 5 hours, we
finished shoveling and racking the dirt under and then but this
plastic tarp over the dirt. We were probably under the trailer home
cutting the tarp and what not for most of the time. It actually wasn't
that bad, it felt good under there, nice and cool, a lot cooler than
in the sun shoveling. Oh and also back on Tuesday, that night there
was a big storm that came in. We were out driving around and first you
saw the wind start blowing like crazy and then you could see the dark
clouds moving in fast. And when the rain started it poured, just
walking or actual long running from someone's house to the car we got
soaked. Oh and with in the first ten minutes of the storm as we were
driving we came across one tree that had fallen and tooken out the
power lines, the fuse box on the pole was down and everything, you
could see it sparking like crazy, then we came across another tree
that got hit by lightening and was split all the way down the middle.
When we got in that night we had no power and stayed without power
until we went to bed, they say it was out for like 4 or 5 hours. Next
morning we saw a lot of trees that had fallen and massive branches
that had broken off.
Then latter in the week things started picking up as far as missionary
work goes. We started finding people left and right, found 7 new
investigators this week, which is crazy. We also set 6 baptismal dates
this week. So you remember Tiffany and Nesha that came to church last
week, well we saw them this week and turns out they loved church, they
were so surprised with how friendly all the members were to them and
the spirit they felt while there. They even came to church with a
question and got it answered. They were so excited to come back,
Tiffany even said that she was going to bring her whole family with
her. And this week we also had a powerful lesson with Tiffany and her
family, set a baptismal date with them for in July and all. Then he
other two dates that we set were Theresa and Andre, two people that we
came across just while knocking doors, they invited us to come back
the next day so we did and had an awesome lesson with them ending with
a baptismal invite which they accepted. But now here it the bummer so
on Sunday we were suppose to have 7 people come to church and no one
showed. Kinda depressing, maybe because it was Father's Day, but we
are going to go back and see them and see what happened. Well that
about raps up my week here in Georgia.
